N3 searches for eucon when it boots, but eucon license is not on the dongle and steiny won't let me download that license for the very reason that N3 doesn't support eucon. That's the message mysteinberg prompts me with. This should not be the issue, however, as I'm only trying to use MCU and set up mackie control devices in N3's device setup.
Have you ever seen eucon actually working on Nuendo3, meaning that a eucon device is made available in nuendo's device setup?

That should not be the problem though cause I'm going for MCU protocol in N3 and the problem seems to be with the eucon client not recognizing and displaying the mc mixes in the discovery database report.

The discovery database does indeed display both the mac and the pc correctly, not the mc mix's though. That's where I've been stuck these last couple of days.

It's a small local network with a dedicated switch, the simplest config it could be. Cat cables are not xover. WinXP sp3 on the pc. Switch instead of router is the way to go for sure, why complicate things. I tried the other two routers I have here about a week ago, it's just messier and I don't see any benefit with having an estra layer of settings. I could be wrong though, but that's a job for my computer guy, which I may have to call in...it seems.

With DHCP the mc mix disappear from eucontrol, and the mac-pc comunication drops as well. If I'm not mistaken that's a macos10.4 quirk. OK, I think I'll set up a diff mac that's on 10.5 for this and see what's happening. That'll allow me to use the latest euphonix apps and drivers.

I'm gonna get to the bottom of this and I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again - ricky

Nuendo 3 should support EuCon. Make sure you have a EuCon.dll component in the Nuendo components directory (MC Workstation client should have installed this). If you have a valid EuCon license then you should be able to add this as a device without problems. Next time you boot Nuendo it should start searching for EuCon aware devices.

Also try displaying your discovery database (right-click the EuControl Discovery app in the system tray and choose to display discovery database) - you should see a EuControl server listed if your PC is talking to your Mac correctly.

I would putting the units into DHCP mode (no static IP) and using a different router/switch. Make sure you are also using the correct type of Ethernet cables (not crossed). Your problem sounds very similar to the one I initially had in setting it up which was traced to a strange network configuration issue. When I put everything on a simple local network they just worked. It's worth a try to eliminate that as being the potential problem area.

If you're on Windows 7 or Vista also try disabling UAC mode for the user account.

Good luck! - Jonathan

You rock Jonathan, thanks for your support with this!

As the mac is on 10.4 for other reasons I can only use Eucontrol 2.03, and the older eucon client app on the PC. These seem to be fine though... t'list it seems that way. Nuendo 3 doesn't support eucon though, that's what I'm reading (it can't appear in the device setup), and mysteinberg won't let me download the eucon license for the same reason. I'll buy Nuendo5 just to get the eucon license and see if that's making a diff, but I doubt it cause Nuendo3 can't use eucon anyway... Can it? (can't make the switch to 5 atm cause I have running projects till mid March. Same goes for macos I'm afraid).

Puters and mc mix's are going into a linksys sd2005 gigabit ethernet switch, that's all fine. The mc mix are set to no dhcp and assigned static ip's within range and all that.

The euphonix app in the control panel of windows is set to do what it has to do, that's not it, and it's all set up inside nuendo3 as well. Mac and pc can see each other fine, and eucontrol on the mac has the right stuff in it (after lots of frustration).

A networking tip for anyone in a similar situation is that macos (maybe only 10.4?...) won't see the PC till the PC's user account has a password. Insane. Of course there's quite a lot more to check when setting up the LAN stuff but that was what had me going for quite a while...

Right, another thing I read on a post is that the eucon discovery app on the PC is supposed to list the mc mix units. That's not happening here. Basically, at the bottom of the discovery database report there is a Eucon_MC and an Eucon_CM408_Surfaces headlines with nothing below them. I guess the MC's will have to appear under the Eucon_MC when/if I ever get this right.

F'em, f'u, f'me... this is 00's computing. Still better than 90's computing tho...and if we survived that, we'll get this working too...

Thanks again Jonathan and let me know if you have any ideas on this.

If it won't attach then check you're running the latest versions of EuControl, you're running a valid OS for EuControl (10.5 or greater if using the newer versions). If you are trying to use the EuCon integration in Nuendo 3 then make sure you have a valid EuCon license and you've added EuCon as a device inside Nuendo. To get this license there are instructions in my article (you need to log onto MySteinberg and download it to your dongle).

If you're going to use the Mackie Control protocol then make sure you've added a Mackie Control device inside Nuendo 3 as well as attaching the MCU emulation to Nuendo 3 (done via the Euphonix panel in your Windows Control Panel settings).

There might also be a network configuration issue which I had at one point. I could see the other workstation but not attach it which turned out to be an issue with the local network I was on. Changing to a dedicated router solved that one... - Jonathan

I'm in the same situation as GP above. Got 2 mc mix here hooked up to a mac running eucontrol, the pc is running the client app and the discovery eucon app sees both mac and pc (what a mindf**k it was for that to happen...), the eucontrol on the mac sees the pc and the mc mix units, but the eucontrol cannot attach the PC workstation. It's on the left list, added to the right but it won't attach it (the tick sign on the right of the PC doesn't appear). Nuendo 3, added mackie control device and the eucon midi ports are there and selected (euconmidi1 for in and euconmidi1 for out), and that other eucon app in the pc's control panel is set to target nuendo3.exe and use mackie control on ports 1-4. When you launch nuendo 3 there's a warning that the eucon licence is not on the dongle but 1)i'm not allowed to download that from steinberg since I'm on nuendo3, and 2) do I need that?. I guess to see any progress with this I'd need to firstly make the pc workstation attach in the mac eucontrol app. Any thoughts?
Make my week!
Thanks! - ricky

Hi,

You still need a Mac to run the Artist series on PC even if using the MCU/HUI protocols. It works very similar to how you would expect but there is nowhere near the level of integration you'll get with EuCon. - Jonathan

Do you still need a Mac if you run Artist under Mackie Control Protocol on Nuendo 3?
Also wondering how they work in this mode....faders ok? aux send selection (which one the knob controls) and level? automation r/w enable for each channel? solo/mute? Channel banking? That's all possible with MackieCtrlProt so I guess the Artist can access these functions somehow?
Do share if you know!
Thanks
