For those that read the original review and article on getting the Euphonix Artist Series to work on PC applications here is a trick for getting these units to work in Cubase 5.  Due to the fact that the Artist Series units are still unsupported on PC, there is no EuCon component in the PC version of Cubase 5 which you can use.  The workaround is to emulate a HUI or Mackie Control device and then add these as a controller devices inside Cubase instead of the preferred EuCon device.

Step 1: Access your Euphonix control panel from "Start -> Control Panel -> Euphonix".  Click on "Add" and browse for your Cubase5.exe file.

Step 2: Once the application is selected you can choose to emulate either HUI or Mackie Control protocols.  4 virtual MIDI ports will also be created and drivers installed - 1 for each Artist Series device you have connected.  In other words, if you are only using a single Artist Series device then you will be only using 1 of the created emulated MIDI ports.

Step 3: In Cubase 5 go to "Devices -> Device Setup" and click on the "+" button to add a new device.  Select either a Mackie Control or HUI device depending on the protocol you chose to emulate in Step 2.

Step 4: Set the MIDI port for the chosen device to the Euphonix emulated MIDI ports.  The input and output port should be the same and if you have added multiple devices (for multiple Artist Series units) then you simply increment these.

Adding the Mackie Control device in the Cubase device setup manager

That's it!  The Artist Series units should now give either Mackie Control or HUI functionality in Cubase 5.  This is not as feature rich as native EuCon but it sure is better than nothing.

Unfortunately this workaround won't work on 64bit operating systems as it requires the installation of emulated device drivers which are currently 32bit only on the PC client software.

Note: In the example above the screenshots were taken on 2 different systems hence the discrepancy between the emulated MIDI ports.

Hmm ... why would you use Artist with MIDI ???
You completely loose the capabilities of the EuCon protocols, you'll just get smaller resolution in everything you do :(

Until there is a native EuCon driver for Cubase 5 on the PC side this is the only option unfortunately.

In the most recent exchange with Euphonix, (2 weeks ago), they cannot say when or if there will ever be PC drivers for the Artist series. I'm totally over it! I'm selling all of my MC Mix and Control units. With the acquisition by AVID, I doubt it is very high on their priority list. Eucon for Pro Tools and Media Composer will be out long before we see PC drivers. Mixed Logic has a well built 24 fader control surface with FULL SUPPORT of Cubase 5.5 for less than 3K. They have no marketing dept. and their web site is 7 years behind the times, but they make a bulletproof product. They are worth taking a look at!
